PEI Potato Museum

The museum is surrounded by fertile potato growing fields where the humble potato has played an important role in the economy for many years. The museum depicts an interesting display of the potato industry, and houses a large collection of farm implements and machinery related to the growing and harvesting of potatoes. In fact, this museum contains the largest exhibit of potato artifacts in the world! In 1999 a major expansion was constructed to accommodate the Potato Hall of Fame, the extraordinary national Amazing Potato Exhibit, and incorporates the Community Museum. The building now covers over 7000 square feet and is air conditioned for your comfort.
Big Potato
The 14 foot fibreglass Russet Burbank potato, stands on the front lawn of the world's only potato museum. It's a big potato and quite unique. This project is representative of potato growing and shipping in our Community and was realized through fund raising efforts by the local potato industry and other interested parties. The potato was created by Pat MacHugh of Waterline Inc., an Island fibre glass company. It is an excellent photograph background for you and your family, which would make a lasting momento of our Community.
The complex includes other attractions on site such as...
Heritage ChapelThe structure has had an interesting history since it was constructed in 1879/1880. Through the years it has served three faiths: Bible Christians, Methodists and Roman Catholics. Because of these changes in congregation, it was moved to O'Leary from its original location in Knutsford, and later to at least one other location in O'Leary. The last services were held in 1990. In 1993, it was moved once again and restored to become part of the museum complex. |
Log BarnThis Log Barn was constructed in 1972 to display agricultural machinery and farm implements from the past, such as a grain thresher, reaper, binder, beater potato digger (Moody), fanners for cleaning grain, a potato cart, a buggy, a jaunting sleigh, plows, and many other items of interest. |
The Little Red SchoolhouseThe little one-room schoolhouse was built around 1900 in the district of Alaska, not far from O'Leary, and continued in use until 1972. It housed students from grade one to ten. In 1995 it was moved to the present site.
Come and spend a moment in quiet reflection of another time and place among its once familiar desks, pot-bellied stove, blackboard, and books ... |
The Confederation Trail

The Confederation Trail is intersected by O’Leary’s main street, and is an excellent starting point for a day of walking, biking, enjoying nature, and getting to know West Prince in a whole new way. Snowmobiling is a popular winter pastime, and the trail offers many rest areas for coffee and warmth.
West Point Lighthouse
A must-visit destination for 2011, the renewed West Point attraction boasts many updates to ensure your visit is one to remember. Topping the list of enhancements for this year are:
- The Lighthouse Museum, with new displays among an extensive collection of lighthouse artifacts
- The renovated and expanded Inn with new furnishings and fixtures, featuring a walk-out deck with every room that overlooks the Northumberland Strait
- Enhanced dining experience with local products and seafood while overlooking the West Point harbour
- A 1,500m boardwalk along the dunes and interpretive trails meandering though this unique environment
- The re-appointed Light-keeper’s suite, restored to its former elegance.
And then, of course, there is the beautiful beach with lifeguards, the Cedar Dunes Provincial Park, the West Point Craft Shop and the expanded marina all waiting here for you.
